मौनी अमावस्या तिथि चुप रहकर, मौन धारण करके मुनियों के समान आचरण करते हुए स्‍नान करने के विशेष महत्‍व के कारण ही माघमास, कृष्‍णपक्ष की अमावस्‍या, मौनी अमावस्‍या कहलाती है। माघ मास में गोचर करते हुए भगवान सूर्य जब चंद्रमा के साथ मकर राशि पर आसीन होते हैं तो ज्‍योतिषशास्‍त्र में उस काल को मौनी अमावस्‍या कहते हैं । मौनी अमावस्या का धार्मिक महत्त्व जानें और क्यों माघ मास की अमावस्या को मौनी अमावस्या कहते हैं ।
